You might imagine that Cradlepoint’s feeling a bit of heat since Novatel released its fantastic MiFi series, since the whole idea behind Cradlepoint’s gear is to turn 3G modems into WiFi access points. It’s cool, though, Cradlepoint managed to find a tricky angle: you can’t charge the MiFi, use it as a USB modem, and have WiFi enabled at the same time! We still think we’d stare, point, and laugh if we were walking through an airport and saw ..read more

Looks like RIM’s getting serious about optical trackballs — first the Curve 8520 ditched the spinner and now it looks like the Onyx has been upgraded as well. That’s pretty much just as we’ve all expected ever since we first laid eyes on this 3G mashup of the Bold and Curve 8900, and we’re pretty stoked about it, since we find optical trackballs to be pretty great. Of course, there’s no word on a ship date, but we’re hoping ..read more

Better late than never, we suppose. Our friends at Mobile Crunch have it on word from a HTC spokesperson that a “vast majority of devices we launch after Hero ” are gonna be including a 3.5mm headphone jack as a standard feature. The rep also added that devices already announced would “not necessarily be part of this change,” which while not ruling it out entirely, doesn’t get our hopes up.

Get alerted to incoming calls and text messages without a lot of impolite clamor with a subtle ultrasonic ringtone. High-frequency ringtones caused a stir awhile back when it was discovered that kids were using them in schools , since older adults generally can’t hear as high up the frequency scale as the young’ns. We even included a nod to them in our Top 10 Body Hacks . While the novelty of hearing a ringtone your teacher can’t hear is ..read more
Trimble may make plenty of GPS-equipped devices of its own aimed at adventure-minded folks, but its Trimble Outdoors software has also made quite a few cellphones a bit more outdoors-friendly, and it’s now finally found its way to the T-Mobile G1. As with on some other phones, the app will let you plan your trip online and sync it up with your G1, and give you the ability to geotag pictures, log your trip and share it with others, ..read more

You know, we were cruisin’ the blogosphere the other day on our tricked out Eee PC , rocking our newly installed trackball , when we realized that we were enjoying ourselves so much that we had completely lost track of the time — and the way that news moves around here, that’s a very dangerous thing. Like, what if @spencerpratt got to the bottom of the moon landing hoax or the conspiracy to fluoridate our water and we totally ..read more

Though the myTouch 3G is really just an HTC Magic at its core, T-Mobile seems to be doing everything it can to gussy it up with as much crapware bloatware value-add software that it can. All kidding aside, this really isn’t crapware — the carrier is apparently quite serious about calling out best-in-class apps in the Android Market , going so far as to create a separate “app pack” application that’ll drill down stuff it wants to highlight. Looks like Samsung’s elves have been busy thinking up new ways to cram a QWERTY onto all those touchscreen phones they’ve been selling lately: check out this patent application for a side-mounted flip-down keyboard. We’re not sure if this would be comfortable, usable, or even stable, but we do know that we support any design decision that makes our phones look more like super-awesome space planes from the future . We’ve seen the Wiimote used to control plenty of wild things , and to be perfectly honest, we’re pretty unimpressed with most of what we see these days. This video, however, made by an Australian with a lot of heavy equipment on hand, is truly awesome. The 15-ton grapples themselves are impressive, elegant pieces of machinery, and using Python to link the Wiimote up as controller via Bluetooth is really just icing on the cake. It’s got a sweet ..read more

It looks like a nefarious cyber-attack which affected several federal websites in the United States was a little more far-reaching than initially thought. The attack — which started on the 4th of July — targeted websites in both South Korea and the United States, including the Treasury Department, Federal Trade Commission and Secret Service. Various problems were still being reported days later, and while there’s no official word on who the attackers were, those “people familiar with the matter” ..read more

Need more evidence that Nokia just doesn’t get it ? Here’s what UK General Manager for Nokia Mike Loughran says about the N97 versus the iPhone 3GS : “The new iPhone is an evolution rather than a revolution and for people trying to decide whether to get a Nokia N97 or an iPhone, it comes down to a decision on performance and value for money… The new iPhone seems to have the same design and colour, upgrading from a ..read more

It may have some 48,000 or so to go before it catches the runaway leader in app choice , but doubling up its catalog after launching just 3.5 months ago ain’t nothing to scoff at. As RIM suffers through the traditional growing pains with its fledgling BlackBerry App World , it has managed to amass around 2,000 programs for users to love, hate or feel completely indifferent about. According to Jeff McDowell, vice president of global alliances, that number ..read more

We’ve been on pins and needles waiting for more info about the Snapdragon-powered Sony Ericsson Rachael ever since we spotted those early images over the weekend, and while the latest pics are still just potentially fan-made renders, it’s the accompanying UI video that we’re freaking out over today. Nearly five months to the day after Amazon introduced its Kindle 2 e-reader, the company has decided to hack a full $60 off of the price tag in order to offer it to US consumers for $299. Sneaking under that magical $300 mark could allow the outfit to move an awful lot more of these buggers, and with the competition finally heating up, we’d say it’s probably a solid defensive move as well. So, are you interested in pulling ..read more

Well, there wasn’t exactly much mystery left around this one, but it looks like the HTC-made Dash 3G (or Maple , or S522 , or Snap ) has now finally rolled its way into availability on T-Mobile’s website, just as expected . While its full suggested price is $349.99, T-Mobile will gladly let this one go for just $169.99 on a two-year contract, which’ll of course get you a Windows Mobile 6.1-based device with a full QWERTY keyboard, and ..read more

T-Mobile CTO Cole Brodman just flat-out said at the myTouch 3G launch event that T-Mobile “has no plans to bring the HTC Hero to market.” It’s an interestingly straightforward denial, versus the usualyl vague statements execs tend to issue like “we have nothing to announce” or “no plans at this time .” Maybe it still means nothing. Even after five iterations, Ben Heck ’s portable Xbox 360 models are still a spectacle to behold — he seems to keep outdoing himself every time, both in functionality and style. Samsung’s Omnia II and its gorgeous 3.7-inch AMOLED screen is still without a Verizon release date, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying Italian site HDBlog’s ten-minute guided tour of the device. Finding information and download links for Android apps isn’t quite easy, whether through a phone’s page-by-page results lists or even the official Market site . For an easier, filtered, browser-friendly Market search, AndroLib.com is the way to go. Apple hasn’t ever been great at this whole “heat dissipation” thing, but some new developments in the supposed overheating iPhone scandal of 2009 have us wondering how widespread or reproducible these problems might be. Here are a few semi-facts we’ve managed to amass: Somebody’s white iPhone 3GS grew some ugly brown markings during heavy use. A new development is saying that the discoloration came from a case (pictured), not from cooking the plastic. More users than usual have been ..read more

We don’t know about anyone else, but we’ve been waiting on LG’s GD910 ever since we first heard about it way back around CES. We’ve already heard that the watch / phone-loving combo would hit shelves sometime in July (that’s now) in Europe, but it looks like it’s going to be more like August — at least in the UK. It’s no secret that using Gmail on a BlackBerry is a painful experience — since the built-in mail client has shamefully broken IMAP support, your only real choice is a variant of the same Java-based Gmail app that runs on ancient featurephones, and that rules out direct integration with either contacts or attachments. The Tweaking with Vishal web site writes up a quick, but useful, registry hack that adds an “Open File Location” item to the context menu , just like Windows 7 or Vista has already.
